Latest Update on Buffalo CarShare Insurance Crisis Dear Members, Friends and Supporters,

Thank you so much to those of you who sent us testimonials, shared our posts on social media, signed our petition and made phone calls to city and state legislators. It is unfortunate that we inform you today that bills S4444B and A8027 did not pass through the legislature this session. The reason for the bills not passing is that leaders in the assembly, including Insurance Committee Chair, Kevin Cahill and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, did not want to change the law to save one non-profit from closure, despite our efforts to educate the entire assembly on the thousands of lives in Buffalo and Western New York that will be affected. Unfortunately, assembly legislators did not think the saving of Buffalo CarShare is significant enough to justify the passing of these bills, nor do they think it is significant enough to find a solution to our insurance crisis.

What this means is that we are still looking for a solution. We have exhausted every other possible option other than absorption. Erie County and the City of Buffalo are not receptive to the idea of running and operating a carsharing service.

Our final option is to become absorbed by a for-profit carsharing company. It is our hope that a for-profit company will recognize that the communities that need carsharing the most are ones like Buffalo’s: with a high percentage of users that rely on carsharing for their basic needs. We would consider this acquisition a huge success, and look forward to the possibility of opening up an entirely new market in for-profit carsharing.

We are unsure if Buffalo CarShare would be able to remain an independent arm of the company or what changes a potential acquisition would make on rates, cars, locations, etc. Our primary focus is to maintain a system in Buffalo to serve the people that rely on it. We are currently having discussions with several for-profits and will send out another update as soon as possible.
